Donne Tempo - Gift Guide - Vinturi

Vinturi ($39.95)
by Jacquie Kubin

Vinturi
Does she like to entertain, drink wine and have everything? She probably does not have a Vinturi wine aerator, a handy, well designed and quite lovely device that instantly aerates both red and white wines without the need for decanting or time, during which your wine may cool or warm beyond your taste level.

And to aerate, or not to aerate, is not the question. A tannin rich red will always improve in bouquet and taste with proper aeration, as will many of the more robust, oaky white wines. A quick search shows many different means in which to achieve this goal, including decanters and many different types of hand-held aerators. My personal favorite, the aeration straw that works like a, well, straw. Pull this out at the next wine-snob filled event and be the talk of the town (sarcasm intended.)

The Vinturi wins my personal recommendation due to the fact that it works, well. You can taste, and smell the difference. But also for its design, which is classic yet modern. The shape is pleasant, easy to hold and it comes with a lovely velvet-like bag so that it can be taken with to a restaurant, where a bottle of wine is seldom allowed to breathe. A handy resting stand catches drips so as not to stain the white table clothes.

Q and A with Rio Sabadicci, creator

Donne Tempo: Why do we want to aerate our wines?
Rio Sabadicci:
Because it makes them taste better, but we don’t really know why. The study is always about the wine going into the bottle, not coming out. But it does make a difference. Done correctly it makes the wine taste better.

DT: There are many types of aerator devices, however the Vinturi works well and it is really beautiful. How did you come up with the design and why does it work so well?
RS:
There was a lot of trial and error but in the end it came down to the Bernoulli Principal that states as the speed of a moving fluid increases, the pressure within the fluid decreases. Aerating wine is referred to as volatilizing, which means to change a liquid to a vapor. And while the Vinturi does not “vaporize” the wine, it does increase the bouquet, highlighting not just the top notes, but also those that are underneath. And something that smells better, tastes better.

DT: Why don’t we decant, or aerate, white wines then?
RS:
White wines are not decanted because they are usually served chilled. With the Vinturi you can instantly aerate your whites, which I suggest you do, and you will find that it actually serves to bring your whites, and reds, to the correct temperature to drink while enhancing their flavors and nose.
