At more than 7,000 feet, the mountains dominate the island, creating an environment that is diverse, ranging from dense habitats to grazing land for wandering goats.

Negril's position at the western end of the mountain range benefits from particularly mild days that are filled with gentle breezes, even when temperatures are high.

Those glorious peaks also create a net for clouds that cool the days heat when they drop their bounty into lush pools, rivers and waterfalls. A perfect time for a nap or a sea-side walk in the rain.

There is the local town of Negril with plenty of nightspots and dining choices, from the local to the posh. In town you can find those adult diversions, however, guests at Beaches Negril may find themselves never leaving the property. It is just too easy to stay put.

From the front door, where smiling and gracious staff members greet arriving guests with a chilled citrus-scented cloth and a tropical fruit juice to sip, to your room, life at Beaches Negril is designed to soothe.

There are no lines at the front desk to navigate, or barriers to stand at while you check in. You are welcomed as though you have just reached your private Caribbean estate.

Guests are enrolled quickly in activities, or not, and then urged to get comfortable, which may mean a nap or a quick change into bathing suits (pack those separate so they are easy to get to) to frolic in one of four large pools or the swirling waters of the Lazy River. Or you may race through the misting pool or plunge down the 200-foot tube slides at Pirates Cove.

Or just find a cool drink and a beach chair on the resort's private seven-mile stretch of white-sand beach where the late afternoon breeze and setting sun work together to remove all that you wish to leave behind.

The resort is a perfect location for leisurely breakfasts and late-morning naps. With 20 lush, jasmine-scented acres on which to play, guests can find almost anything that combines the sun, surf, sand and pleasure.

With comfort in mind, from the island-inspired architecture and decor, down to the terra-cotta floors and vibrant in-room color schemes, everything is "No-problem, mon” an island idiom that becomes part of a visitor's language, offering an immediate connection with the largely native staff.

Beaches Negril is an all-inclusive resort, and that means just about everything is there for the taking - all the beachside amenities, water-sports equipment, snorkeling and some scuba diving.

The resort has a variety of restaurants open and waiting and full-service bars ready for walk-up or swim-up requests ranging from a soda to the drink of the day, usually a creation of tropical juice and Jamaican rum.

Call room service for a glass of wine and a chilled bottle is delivered cheerfully to the room.

Amenities are offered graciously before guests realize they are wanted. When asked about this service, one staff member simply responded, "We are always ready in case you might want them."

Keeping everyone happy, there are plenty of entertainment options at Beaches Negril. An agreement with the Sesame Street folks has Elmo and Zooey gleefully dancing through the porticos.
